Freshwater Dip Instructions

I'm sure this has been covered somewhere, but I couldn't find it in my searches, so my apologies if I'm repeating an old question.

All the instructions I've seen on freshwater dips say to match the temperature and pH, then dip the fish for 10-15 min (and not panic if it looks dead!)

What I haven't seen is a guide on how to adjust the pH. Are there any guides out there? Does one simply use baking soda, or are there other safer/better methods?

If you're using RODI water to do the dip, then trying to get a pH reading is almost impossible. A trick I learned is to add a little water from the tank the fish is coming from to the f/w dip. That usually does the trick or at the very least let's you get a pH reading you can then adjust.

Baking soda and vinegar are usually the two common and easily obtainable compounds to adjust your pH for a FW dip. There are a number of commercial products (pH up/pH down) available in your local pet shops to also help.

I use washing soda (sodium carbonate) and vinegar (acetic acid) and can usually pin the pH down to match. A calibrated pH meter helps as well.

Can you use the same dip mixture for more than one fish or should it be changed out for every fish?
