Keeping clown and leather together in QT
I would like to add an ocellaris clown to my tank, but am concerned that it will associate with a very nice bubble coral to its detriment. There is also a smaller hammer that I don't want wrecked either. I am picking up yellow leather tomorrow and am considering getting the clown at the same time and placing both in the QT together. Questions:
Will this adversely affect the coral? It is a 10 gallon tank with a regular flourescent light. I would QT for 30 days. Has anyone had any luck "forcing" a clown to accept a coral this way? If it does not associate with this coral, does it follow that it will not latch on to my bubble either? Thanks |

Clowns are fickle. No predicting what corals it will or won't host in. I've had clowns that hosted on a coral even when they had an anemone in the tank.
I've heard and it makes sense that captive raised clowns are less likely to host, since they have never been in the ocean and may have never seen an anemone, but still, some do (and whether this is even true ???) Keeping them in QT together should be fine... unless you have to add meds for the clown, then you'll have to take the coral out.

In the end, they're going to do what they want, when they want. But I guess that makes them a good pairing for the equally fickle anemone. Has anyone ever gotten an anemone to stay in the place you wanted it to? My only concern would be when you initially bring the clowns and leather home. The LFS around me keep their fish at 1.019 sg and corals & inverts at 1.026 sg.
