Arrow wavemaker for 10 gallon tank

Hi everyone, I'm currently setting up a 10 gallon tank and bought a 1300 gph wave maker. But it seems that wave maker is too strong; when I put the wave maker in it looks like a storm going on in the tank. How many gph wave maker should I get for 10 gallon tank? Is 800gph ok or a smaller one?

Your tank must look like a toilet bowl right now. You can get away with two 240 gph power heads on each side. Way too much flow.

I found that a single 400gph marineland head was incredibly too strong for a 10g. I upgraded to a 20g and ordered a single 240gph hydor koralia nano powerhead and I don't think i even need it, the flow from the return pump already seems like it's battering my torch and hammer coral.

The general consensus is about 10-20x turnover, sometimes a little more, sometimes a little less, that would depend on number of pumps, stock and location. A 1300gph in a 10g tank equivalents to a 130x turnover rate.. Which is way, way too much.

I'd say go with two to three 100-240gph powerheads. Some powerheads have power, but are very directional, some are a bit slower, but have a broader beam(if you will) of water..

Good luck, and I hope you can get a money return on that 1300gph pump.

i have an mp10 on full blast in my 10gallon frag tank. everything is happy and you can hardly tell there is water moving (large volume, low velocity). you dont want to blow a cheap powerhead at corals as it is a low volume high velocity stream.
