lighting for coral
Whats a good light to light up the coral at night time. At my LFS they have a frag section under LED lights and the frags were so colorful. I took them home to find out my lights werent close to the same. What makes the color pop so much? Thanks!

Nothing beats metal halide.... Led is just a phase... LEDs have such an extraordinarily narrow bandwidth, it is al out impossible to get the necessary light for coral growth... Metal halides would be the best choice... But if you want to save in your electric bill nothing beats LEDs...

LED's can grow coral, and color them up; colors just seem somewhat flat. Minuscule electric bill + virtually no heat produced by the lights also means for most people that they do not need to have a chiller(yet another expense and higher electric bill). T5 and MH are proven lights. They can grow well and color up a coral very well. Coloration wise, your best bet will be to go with T5's. ATI PM is one of the best proven fixtures that you'll get for T5's. MH's, also pack a punch and have great coloration, it's undeniable. For a more even source of light though, personally I would go with a mix of two of these lights. MH with T5 supplements or MH with LED Royal Blue supplements. Hope this helps some. |

Right now I have the Coralife 72" light. has the 3 - 250 MH with 14,000 bulbs and 4-96w power compacts and has the 4 led moon lights...with the 4 led moon lights I can see some of the color of the coral but the leds arent enough for the whole tank...should I add leds for night time or t5 with 420nm-500nm bulbs? Thanks for the help
