Supplemental LED lighting
Unfortunately this is yet another lighting question
I currently have a 48'' ATI 6x54w Sunpower fixture and was interested in supplementing with some LEDs for 'shimmer effect' and possibly moonlighting. I was wondering if anyone had undertaken a similar project. If possible I would like to go the DIY route and attach a strip of LED to the fixture housing but as I dont have the fixture yet and have no experience with LED strip lights I have no idea if this will work. Or if anyone has other suggestions they are appreciated. Thanks -MC |

I think the problem you will run into is trying to maintain the super clean look of the ATI Sunpower if you try to attach a bunch of LEDs to it. That is a sleek fixture you are getting. Also, since you haven't received the fixture yet, don't assume you won't be happy with it and that it will need supplementation. I would just hold tight for now and fire it up when you get it, then decide. I would hate to see such a nice fixture have LEDs glued all over it.

RapidLED for the DIY, as far as how many and what exactly you need post this same question under their vender thread on here and they will answer any and all questions. They sell high quality Cree LEDs and you can choose from a ton of different options and choose solder or they plug and play type

You could order some 1.4 inch heatsinks from rapid led. I have heard it takes quite a few leds to add shimmer to that many t5s. Or you could replace one or two bulbs with led strips. Just depends on what your trying to do.

Haha Dmorty I was typing the same time as you. You're just a faster typer. +1 to posting in rapids forum. Also search this topic. There are some other examples of this same thing out there.
