How often to clean fuge without disturbing pod population?

Guys, wanted to know how often do you guys clean the sump? And how do you go about doing it without messing up or sucking up the pod population? I'm using a bucket head to clean out the sump when I do but, I feel as though I wipe out my pods when I do that?

I grow pods in a 20 gallon remote refugium. I trim the macro and scrape the front glass maybe once a month, otherwise I never clean it. It cleans itself. Been going on for almost 3 years now. As to the sump, I wet-vac maybe every 6-9 months, or whenever it starts to get crud. If you have the refugium incorporated into the sump, you can clean the other chambers and leave the fuge alone so you don't decimate the pod population.

Ahhh that's how the pros do it! It seems so simple but, when i was cleaning it out last week i was afraid and didnt want to completely destroy the pod population. Thanks for the insight
