Spectrapure vs Purely H2O vs BRS (bulk reef supply) RO/DI

So what is the difference between these four stage RO/DIs, anything?

Here's my situation: I have the purely so I just bought two pre filter replacement kits, but then found out that since the RO/DI hadn't been used in a while that all the canisters including the membrane canister were sealed shut.

So my first thought was to buy replacement parts from Purely, but they were cheaper through BRS....However I found a refurbished four stage complete unit with filters for just $20 more than just the replacement parts.

So here's my questions: what is the difference between these units? If one is better, why? And, if I end up buying a different brand, will these 10" pre filter kits that I just bought going to fit in the other brand.

Thank you!

IM don't know the whole water filtration game very well but I went off the recommendation of a member of another forum who is local to me... He actually works in water filtration and he will hands down recommend the spectrapure even time. ( he don't work for them). If u are on any other forums I could give u his name and he will be willing to tell u why and is very thorough.

It may be hard to find someone familiar with all three.

I have had my Spectrapure for more than a decade and am very happy with it. It is very high quality and easy to use. Spectrapure sells membranes they have tested to confirm high performance.

I'm with Colliebreath. I've owned a lot units and the membranes of spectrapure themselves are worth the cost difference. They also use a different blend DI resin which should increase the life of the resin. It's expensive but I often find it on sale at any holiday and then it seem to be the most cost effective solution. I really like their units and their customer service is great as well.

I haven't owned any other RODI system and I too own a SpectraPure RODI system - that I have had for about 8 years and all checks out with it. Great quality parts and the performance is incredible. For the most part, their location makes getting my parts in the next couple of days a GREAT FEELING.

This is my RODI system of choice.

Ok, so if I go with the Spectrapure, I should be able to use up the prefilters that I already purchased, right? I know, the DI resin may not be as good but it should be good enough to make it through several months until I'm back to the Spectrapure brand...and I'll still be using the Spectrapure membrane.

I can't answer your most recent question, but I would like to make one more point about SpectraPure. Once you're on their list, they e-mail you specials periodically. That is when I buy replacement cartridges. I also recommend them.

I own the Spectrapure 90 gpd 4 stage refurbed model, it is basically brand new. From what I have heard they Spectrapure sold them to a buyer who went bankrupt and they got them back but cant sell them as new.

That's great...did you recently buy yours? I wanted to call Spectrapure yesterday, they aren't open on the weekends.

Your replacement filters will work in the spectrapure unit, they are all interchangable.

Imo and i own both the brs system and purelyh20 unit and can tell you the units themselves are basically the same, the diffrence between most filters are the quality of filters and membranes each brand uses.

Fishinwall, does your water supply contain chloramine?

Mine does; a lot of public water systems use it because it is cheaper than strictly using chlorine. But it doesn't just evaporate like the chlorine does.

I have no idea if it will hurt reef inhabitants but it can do a number on humans. I used to work in the beer wholesale business. Bars will handwash glasses, rinse them in water, then finally dip them in a solution of water with just a few drops of a chloramine sanitizer. It makes for a very clean, sanitary beer glass. The kind where the foam clings to the side of the glass and leaves foam rings.

But I used to listen to our on-premise guys warn bartenders in training not to ever overdo the chloramine, even a little bitty bit. They said you wouldn't see the customer for a long time as they would be home with a really nasty case of Montezuma's revenge.

That just doesn't sound good for tanks. I'm thinking about adding a chloramine filter before my Spectrapure unit that has been running flawlessly for about nine years. Customer service is good with Spectrapure as I'm sure is the same with the other two. Good luck.

A standard carbon filter will remove chloramines.

I changed my DI resin for the first time today. I was surprised that the refill did not entirely fill the container. A good inch or more of space. I didn't drop a bead. Is this right?

I think it should fill the standard container. I have a spectrapure system and I am happy with it for years.

If you have the spectrapure carts that are larger a standard size refill won't work.

DI needs to be packed in or it isn't as effective.

Well this isn't good. I just have a standard filter and just bought replacements ( two sets) when I bought the unit from Sctrapure.

I may have to call them. I don't get it.

My thought is this. You get more than just a product when you make a purchase. There is a lot of value that some customers do not understand. A couple of us manufacturers are actively helping people on a daily basis on forums, emails, phone calls. I would choose a company that you can visibly see the ones that are providing solid information and help on a daily basis. Look for the people looking to help. Those are the companies that you want to purchase from. This can go for any product for any application pertaining to life.

The companies that don't have the time to help people shouldn't get the sale from the people that the they don't have the time to help.
