Sump Socks

I have an eshopps model 1 sump with filter socks. I also have a protein skimmer that collects quite a bit of gunk. My question is, are the socks necessary? Can I run the sump without them or are they integral to keeping the tank clean?

Protein skimmers don't pull out the same stuff as filter socks generally. If you want filter out items that would likely sink quickly through the bubbles or not rise up in the first place, then you will need something like a filter sock.

I've never ran a filter sock 24/7, and have gotten by just fine. It seems like more and more hobbyists are getting rid of them these days. I do however use one for an hour or so to polish the water during a water change, but that's about it. This is after I've used a powerhead to stir everything up in the sump, and blow the detritus off the rocks in the DT.

btw, if you do the sock thing and you just put them in to shine up the water i.e. while you are watching.. go with 25 micron.

If you want to run them all the time, then probably the 100 micron. The 200 micron don't do a lot except keep rocks out you pumps...only a slight exaggeration. You will have to swap them regularly, get several.
