Accessorizing
I live in RI, and we just got whacked with a huge snowstorm. I had to chuckle because a few days before, I started to think about the very real possiblity of losing power, and what that would do to my reef tank, which is only a few months old. I have fish, inverts, corals, and I couldn't bear the thought of losing them. I have lived in RI my whole life, and have never had a generator through all the hurricanes, and winter storms, we've dealt with. I am now at peace, knowing if I lose power, I can keep my tank going with my newly acquired generator. Just another, very expensive, accessory. LOL

I have toyed with the idea of buying a generator for my tank, also. My fear is that my wife would be sitting in a cold dark house and say something like, "Why is your fish tank the only thing on?". Then I'll be forced to decide between the fish and her. Not sure which side of that decision she is going to end up on.

before i had a 6000watt gas portable generator that would power pretty much any average tank and a few more things like a small fan or lights etc. my 300gal with every gadget u can think of draws 3200watt at full strength. now u know chiller and heaters will not be on at same time. nor few other devices so actual running watts are probably lower.
generator cost at home depot $299 now i have a natural gas generator that runs the whole house. cost $8000.
