Time to paint my stand

I’m getting ready to paint my DIY 90 gallon stand. The exterior of the stand will be black, but I’m worried about what kind of paint to use on the interior. The “basement” of the stand will house a sump / refugium, so I want to use something that will protect my (wood) stand from the constant moisture exposure. Any suggestions?

I used regular latex on the outside of past tank stands, but would probably go with an oil based paint made for exteriors for the humid underside.

I like to use Kilz Complete for the primer coat......note this isn't the regular latex Kilz....the Complete is an oil based primer that sticks like grim death. I like to cover this with a good exterior latex. Just watch out for the vapors from Kilz Complete....they are nasty.

+1 on the Kilz - it will seal pretty much anything!

Thanks guys, I’ll use Kilz. I’ll also clear my schedule of any afternoon appointments prior to use.

For the outside I suggest spray paint in a flat black. I did this on my DIY 40B stand and hood and it looks store bought. And SO much faster plus dry to the touch in like 10 minutes.

I used appliance paint on the interior bought from Lowes. Just plain Bear Premium Plus latex for exterior, applied with a roller after two coats of Kilz primer, sanded between coats.

I Am going to try the rubberized spray paint "flex seal" for the inside of my stand. Comes in black or white

honestly I just used whatever interior latex paint I had lying around. The paint barrier has held up just fine through salt creep and moisture droplets on the underside of the top. I did use a primer on the bare wood.

The oil base would of course work fine as well but it's significantly more hassle and smell for a marginal increase in protection.

Note, I also siliconed up all the interior seams where water could penetrate. Don't enclose your stand completely though, as that could promote mildew and such. Allowing some airflow by drilling ventilation holes in the back should keep moisture build-up down and allow any spills to dry without sitting for too long.

Good luck!
