ok, so this is that 2.5 gallon pico I've been talking about. Not my best pictures, but the camera really hates the glass, so deal with it lol.
It's been running for over a month now and this is my final setup. I've got a double polyped green stripe mushroom, a rough purple shroom, and the galaxia frag.
For stock I've got a nassarius nail, emerald crab, blue leg hermit, micro brittle star, and a margarita snail.
Any suggestions or tips or comments on my tiny reef?
Thanks for helping me along my way to this pico setup!

I'm dissapointed at how few people have shown intrest in this... especially since such a comparitavvely large number told me it couldn't be done by a beginner.
Well, I've done it and it seems now nobody is interested to see how it went and help me continue.
Anything?
ideas for scape improvement and coral filling?
stock ideas?
questions? comments?
I'm thinking of putting pulsing xenia on top of the big rock, some button polyps on the middle(leaning) rock, and fillingthe flat back corner rock with ricordea. what doyou think?
THANK YOU!!!

maybe I'm missing a detail or two...but please explain...what couldn't be done that you did?

Don't take it personally that you aren't getting any comments...I have a build thread in this nano forum with over 12k views and only around 150 comments lol. I used to hit refresh all the time waiting for someone to reply.

A lot of times I feel like I'm being used lol...take all the time to take pics, videos and share my info and get nothing lol. I have found build threads to be very useful in documenting what's going on with your tank and when for your own references.

When you have issues you will get better feedback in the help or specific forums relating to that issue or species.

Anyways.. I look forward to seeing some more pics. Looks like you are enjoying your little reef. Xenia will take over...but can look very cool as long as you don't want to add a lot of other corals.

I'm curious what the net looking background is...some sort of partition for a fuge/sump in the back? I think it is...pretty sure I see a heater behind it or something...maybe a thermometer back there on the left side. OK...more pics please lol

haha, thanks!
everyone kind of freaked out when I said I wanted to start a 2.5 gal tank as my first ever reef. Said I've gotta start with thirty minimum. I was like psshh...
Anyway, the backround is just some fabric stuff. you know in the bottom of those square reusable cloth bags there is that piece of stiff rectangle? it's ne of those...I just stuck it back there for some color
with the xenia, I was thinking I'd let it fill the top of that big rock, and if it keeps going I'll start fragging off chuncks and trade them to the lfs.
I moved that branchey looking rock today. I placed it in the back corner next to those other rocks because it looked to crowded. now It's more like 2 islands instead of random rocks. makes the tank look bigger.
I'll try to get some more pictures. (grrrr my camera hates this tank!)
I'll see if I can show you Bitsy my emerald crab too. I'm hoping to get another and call her Itsy, hehe.
Anyway, thanks!I'll keep updating as It fills up!

Your little reef is super cute I def like the shrooms though in my experience a galaxea may not last long in such a smll tank an at night they will sting alot! I think they can extend up to 6" not sure. If I were you I would get zoas and palys. They are super easy to keep and add so much coral. Even the cheap eagle eye zoas will do wonders for you. Id stay away from some of he leather corals they grow fast and take over not to mention constant fragging o themselves lol!

I like the algae you've got going there! Keep an eye on it!

Are you thinking about getting a fish? There are some really really kool pygmy gobies out there. If your Lfs doesn't have them they could possibly order them for you.

I would honestly Truro stay away from clown gobies. Thu stress sooo easy and are very prone to Ich. I have had 2 get it. One inject in a hospital tank now he's had it for about 2 months with some signs of improvement. Whether it's green or yellow almost all the clown gobies t my Lfs have Ich. It's sad really....

Hah! i was right...I supposed that clown gobies must be especially seceptable, since the onevI tried had it, but others told me those were the hardiest kind! maybe I will try a neon cleaner goby, butI'm still paranoid about the whole ich thing...
I've got pretty high lighting I think, and thegalaxea is growing fast and causing no trouble yet, so I'm keepingmy fingers crossed! I'm being careful with placemet of other corals though.
I'm kinda anti-zoa, because it seems everything I like wants to eat it, plus they're really pricey around here!
I'm looking into some nice watermelon(pink and green) palys though.
I also plan on another emerald, 2 red reef hermits, and an astrea snail.I'm looking for a suitably sized shrimp...any ideas?
thanks for looking! I love your pico too!<3

Hey squishi your tank seems to be coming along very well. Looking forward to a fts when your camera cooperates. Keep up the good work.

Also saw in another thread you're from UT. Not sure where but there are some great reefers in the state. One in particular has a great build thread going in the large reef tank section- if you're interested do a search for Anderson Family Reef. Really nice reefer, crazy build.

Cheers!

anyway...i'm working on it. I think I'm finally happy with the setup. good for coral placement I think.

I'm thinking of adding either a trimma, neon goby, or a marine guppy. what do you think of those options?
I'm also planning fill those back corner rocks with mushrooms, and grow some pulsing xenia up the back wall(yes I know it's invasive...I'm good with that)
so..what do you think?

I don't think you'll have much of a problem with the Xenia, if it grows too much you can usually simply slowly peel the ones that bug you from the rocks manually - They usually come off rather easily and in one piece. It will be especially easy since you won't have a problem reaching them in this size tank.

One thing you should consider, however, is, that when you add more corals to the tank you should do regular water changes religiously, because corals can release chemicals and nematocysts into the tank water and those might bug the other inhabitants in such a small setting. But I'm sure there's a bunch of info on that in the nano section of RC.

As far as the fish choices go, they all seem okay to me, you'll just have to research whether the particular species you choose prefers to live in a group or not. You could also go for a small shrimp goby but it will be best to look at other tanks and see how they fare. I'm not really certain about marine guppies - I read that they can live in SW but to be honest it seems a bit strange to me to keep a FW fish in a marine tank... Maybe I'm too old-school for that...

yeah, it is a little wierd, i'll admit, but 15¢ is much easier than the $15-30 you could spend on regular sw ones!

That's true - but I've been in the saltwater hobby for so long that $15-20 doesn't really seem that much anymore, lol. I guess one gets used to the prices...

My opinion: You can certainly try a guppy (or a few), They aren't hard to catch if you want to give them back to the LFS or a fellow reefkeeper at any point.

Too bad! But maybe you'll be able to pick one of these up somewhere sometime. It's a slow hobby and you can always change some things about the tank/livestock at a later time.

Nice emerald pic btw.

could I get a fighting conch TEMPORARILY to clean the sand? just a little one for a few weeks and the return it? I just need something to slurps all the brown algae off to slow the growth. I've been siphoning it out, but a lot of it gets mixed back into the sand which only makes the issue worse...

Once all of your silicates are sucked up you won't have diatoms any
Ore. This is part of he cycling process you just have o let it ride. It's not worth gettinbthe conch I promise! How's that galaxia? So zoa prices there are slot? That's too bad! How are rics? Or maxi mini anemones? That would be sweet to get a maxi or something. I've been wanting a small clam. A Lfs here has clam for $35 but they are the harder variety to keep so I'm iffy on it. I love how tour tank is coming along btw!
