large sump or small sump

I am building a 40 gallon breeder and trying to decide which sump to use,
1) Should I get as big of a sump that will fit and put everything inside the sump?
2) Or get a small sump and leave room on the outside for reactors and external pumps?
Any help or suggestion will be greatly appreciated.

It would really depend on what type of tank you are trying to set up and what equipment you plan on using. More information on you plans would help get you the best advice

Thanks I would like to give SPS a go this time, not to many fish. I will probably putting in a Bubble Magnus NA6A skimmer, need room for 3 reactors GFO, carbon and bio pellets, also have in the wings a Korallin calicum reactor/nitrate reactor.
