Ques for the experts..

Hey RC! I had a question... My father in law told me about periwinkle snails and did some research on them... Ques is... Is it safe to add them to my aquarium? I have a 75g reef... How and will they affect the ecosystem or my CUC in any way? Are there any pros or cons? He found a lot for a cheap price so I wanted to educate myself through the many experienced on here before introducing them. Any help would be appreciated thanx again and Happy Easter to all!!

It's illegal to take wildlife from the ocean for a marine tank, I believe. You have to have a collector's license.

No expert here. But, from my knowledge they are algae eaters. They love to crawl out of the water (above your waterline). They do this by nature (tidal species). You have to check daily for this. If not, they will die of dehydration. When placing back in tank, be sure to set them upright. They cannot right themselves (I don't like suicidal snails, lol). Seem like a lot of work for some snails. IMO.

I have zig zag periwinkles from reef cleaners in my tank. They are really cute but probably too small to be very effective. I just like having lots of different stuff in my tank so I enjoy them.

No offense but I don't agree with you. My snails drop from the sides and land in every possible position. I don't have dead snails and when I look later, they have moved even when upside down.
Also, all of my snails have at sometime or other climbed past the water line. All have easily found their way back into the water and required no regular maintenance.

Maybe yours are different. Are you vodka dosing ? (just kidding)

What kind of snails do you have? Some can right themselves, others have a lot of trouble doing this.
