Another poor slob who needs help choosing a skimmer!

The tank will be a 125 mixed reef with a (hopefully) moderate bioload.

I am between the three in the poll and I cannot decide! I narrowed it down to these three due to positive reviews and footprint.

Fixed!!

None of the above. Consider choosing a Reef Octopus to your specifications - if you want DC speed control, the Diablos use waveline pumps (rebranded "Diablo"). Otherwise, I'd consider a R.O. super sump saver design if for no other reason that it's a pretty big company, so getting a warranty replacement part should be pretty easy.

The RO was my first choice. I am currently running the 110NW and I love it! At first I was thinking the RO NWB150, but the foot print is bigger than I would like and then I looked at the Diablo XS160, but a lot of the reviews complained about the noise level (worked well otherwise). The space savers are a little pricey for me - I'm trying to stay in the $300-$350 range.

Do you have any first hand experience with the Diablo? Have you noticed that it's loud?

I don't have a Diablo (yet), but I've seen one in action. I didn't notice the sound, but I also have different standards than other folks - I don't want a tank to be "silent" (makes me nervous that a piece of equipment has failed!).

Yes, it is. You can mitigate somewhat this by covering one of the air holes on the muffler. I don't find that to be a good solution though, the Diablo (non-DC pump) already pulls too much water and not enough air, there's no need to worsen that ratio. Alternatively, you could try to build your own muffler out of PVC.

I run a Super Reef Octopus 2000int which pulls an amazing amount of skimate. Its rated at 180g so depending on your sump size it might be undersized.

RLSS skimmers are excellent! I have had a bunch of different skimmers from Bubble King to the cheapest and will put the RLSS up against any of them for the best bang for your buck.
