Best pump for new 75 gal Tank.

I'm going to be getting a new 75 gal tank and sump. What pump and size should I get. I plan on probably using pump to also drive a reactor as well.

Depends what your overflow rating is. I run a mag 9.5 on my 75g. I probably would've been fine with a mag 7. Eheim 1260 is another option. Sicce or tunze are other good pumps.

I am using a Speedwave 5000 dc pump and love it!!

Completely silent and as powerful or as weak as I want it to be.

I have a 65gal and 25gal sump mixed reef .

Ive read reviews of pumps and debated only to go with mag 9.5 was really good flow but while I was running the tank with rock and sand waiting on my skimmer that was on back order from reef-octopus my mag9.5 made a hi
Horrible noise !! Contacted smith&foster they told me they send me replacement shaft but I examined the inside and it was made a deep gash on the wall of the pump I asked for refund. Did more reading and found its common problem of the shaft snapping!

I stumbled on reef octopus water blaster pump could be run internal or external. The pump feature a digital control circuit board inside that controls directional start up and RPM speeds. This smart circuit board will shut the pump off if it detects a problem. Something never seen before on internal or external pumps is the Silicone and was 37 watts compared to the mag 9.5 97watts and runs hot .

I contacted my LFS and they put in a order for the 3000 model, installed and could not even think it was working !! Thats how Quiet it was only could Hear the waves in the tank
With my led's and all my Equipment my tank temp is nicely controlled 78.3 degrees have no problem with heat at all even with the hot summer days.

Been running for half year and no problems at all. Flow is excellent with added flow Accelerator. Overall very happy with that extra $100 spent over Mag

I like my Mag 9. It's going to be louder and hotter than most of the more expensive pumps, but they are a good performer for the money.

You can also look into Laguna, Tunze, Sicce, or Eheim.

I heard the same thing about this pump...I'm leaning toward getting it too.
What about Ehiem?

Eheim hobby pumps are great. Very reliable. People say they like the Eheim compact series too.

If your going to run a reactor with your return pump and want optimal performance from your purchase I'd opt for a sicce 4 or eheim 1262. You can't go wrong with either or.

I have the tunze 1073.05 on a 75gal and it is running a GFO reactor. It is almost non audible. One nice thing about it is that it comes with it's own controller to adjust flow. I'm really happy with the pump and wish I would have just spent the money on it the first time around. Very well built.
I recently changed from the mag 7. The mag 7 had plenty of flow but it ran hot and was loud, it was by far the loudest thing in the tank. I have a bubble blaster pump on my octopus skimmer and it is super quiet compared to the mag 7.

I considered ehiem also but still ended up likeing the Water blaster pump
And so far no regrets starts up perfectly every time I personally love the RPM control.
Have never tested the fail safe automatic shut off when it detects a problem . Still I Kind of wondering how it works. How long it would run dry ect... Before shut off .

I'm running this same pump on my 75gal. So far I'm having the same results.

No it's controlled it's self on start up.
In a 1min or under not sure it's full speed just helps/prevent damage from a pump powering on full blast after a power outage or u manually turning it on/off.

That was before the DC pumps made a big splash.

I have to say just looked at the speedwave DC pump and has a nice shaft that looks the same in the water blaster pump . But with lower price and more ways to play with the pump
I wish I kinda seen it would really be nice something .
+1 on speedwave

I would go bigger than what you actually think you need. For a 75 I would do a mad 9.5 or something around 10x gph your total volume. Youll lose some GPH from head pressure and more from the reactor(s) you plan on running.

I myself run a mag 12 with a biopellet reactor T'ed off of it on my 120.
