Now I really feel like a newbie :( Zoanthid question

I have a 90 gallon tank and I do run carbon in it. I have a colony of zoanthids that just got bugged by my Green Bubble Tip Anemone. One of the polyps came off the colony and is now sitting on one of my Ricordia. I tried to blow it off onto the substrate untill my husband gets home but there it is sitting on top of it again when I looked into the tank. I know nothing of these zoanthids. Is this really bad? Are they toxic? Is it normal for polyps to come off and float around?

I wouldn't be too concerned. It will blow around until it finds a spot it likes.

Is that how zoanthids spread? Do they just detach and float somewhere else? My Anemone was doing this to my red mushrooms and they were detaching so I moved them and now he has worked his way to the Zoanthids. I am not sure why he has decided to go near the corals all of a sudden. He usually kept to himself but now he is much bigger and almost looks like he is stretched toward them on purpose (although I don't think that is really the case). If I keep moving corals I will run out of room.

Ah, the joys of a nem in a reef. See if you can redirect some water currents and get this fellow herded against the rockwork and against a side glass, including stacking up a little 'cup' of rubble for it to nest in. If you have more than one nem, you are going to have adventures.

my cleaner shrimp decided to help me out with this one. He molted and left his molt on the anemone so the anemone was pretty busy with that all day today swallowing it and spitting it out again and it kept him away from my corals. What a helpful cleaner shrimp. I also redirected the water current a little. Thanks!

my zoas will detach from time to time and float around. usually it's very small ones that release and float around, not the fully grown ones.

mine also appear to spread out from a "runner" to cover adjacent rocks to the one they're on.

They normally spread on the Live Rock, at the very bottom of the polyp. Best time to see it, is at first lights on. Usually, if they get disturbed, they will close rather quickly.

Now, going the other way, if your colony is not doing so good, they will shrink and seem to "melt away" I have actually never seen one detach or break off, I also don't have a Nem either.

Here is one of my colonies, at first light. You can see between Polyps, how they are attached to each other and the LR:

Unfortunately, I think my anemone is going back to the LFS if they will take him. I am feeling badly about this because he was a newbie purchase because I had clown fish and wanted them to host with it but they never did and I didn't try to force the issue. The rock he is on is one of our best rocks too. He is one of my favorite things in the tank but he needs a bigger tank with less corals in it or an anemone only tank. I have a 90 gallon. My rocks are not really set up so I can direct him into a more remote place and I have to work around him way too much. I feel terrible about having gotten him in the first place.

Your colony looks nice. My colony is doing well but is on a rock that is one I can move around easily (sort of like a large rubble rock). They seem to be just staying on this one little rock not spreading to other rocks at all. I have over 100 polyps on them and they are running out of room.

It is always a risk of getting an Anemone and the small chance your clowns will host it. You could always try to sell it on your local reef forums part of RC.

My clown has hosted Xenia, a toadstool mushroom and currently Zoas. Never had an Anemone in the tank.
