Serious Xenia problem
I got a serious Xenia problem for the last year or so. My aquarium has been overgrowed. Even that I try to remove them every mouth by hand. My aquarium is 1500 l., and it is not possible to remove them by hand or clean the stone. So I need some suggestions about which animals, which can eat my corals. I know some damsel fish can. But which species can be used.
Do you have other ways to help me. It will be fine. I have try to remove my phosphate by Xport media. But they still grow. All the best Esben |

Fluke Tabs kill Xenia. It is a pretty drastic treatment, but it works. Look at this thread:

I had the same problem about six months ago. I tried a majano wand, and manual removal, which just spread it to every inch of the tank. I ended up plumping a 37 cube into my system to hold all of my corals and removed all the rock and replaced it with dry rock. Any of the coral that had xenia on it did not go back into the tank. Now the only soft coral in my tank is zoas, and mushrooms.

before you kill them, frag off as many stems/necks as you can. you can sell them to almost any lfs and make some good money and then kill off the remains with whatever you prefer.

kalk them. Remove as much as you can and kalk paste the rest... you know, in groups so you dont spike your ph. It will take a while but nothing good ever comes fast.

I agree kalk would work. Personally I have a 30g full of them as well. I just remove some and give them to my lfs for other products. It is nice cause I dont have to spend any money at 5 dollars a head.

There are so many in my tank that it can only be remove by animals. Kalkwasser, remove by hand or dry the stones are impossible.
I don't care about the money to frag them. I have plenty of other corals I frag, and have 2 aquariums only with frags of stone corals, zoa and ricordeas. Here in Denmark, where I live. No one want Xenia  I have read that Wurdmanii shimps or damsels can eat them. But I need to know, which damsels are perfect for this matter All the best Esben |

High power laser.. Not joking either.. Grab yourself at least a 1.5 watt laser and burn the crap out of them I have a 1.8 watt .. You can cook them into oblivion.. It will take a while but it will get the job done. I have controlled them to a little patch on my rock work by scraping them off with a razor to just slime on the rock and go over that area with a focused beam and you can hear them popping and cracking and the next day or so it's completely gone.. Works on mojanos and aptasia also.. If you need the info on purchasing them PM me as its not exactly illegal but it's not legal lol.. It cost me about $160 for a full kit laser, batteries, charger and safety goggles.. These thing are dangerous so read up on them before you even attempt to get one..
YouTube has some videos of them destroying aptasia.. It works on xenia also but only after manual removal due to the time it takes per stalk if it's not just the base.. If money's not an object the bigger the laser the more kills you get per on cycle.. It's fun too. My wife thinks I'm a geek when I kick everyone out of the room so they don't go blind to roast random things in my reef lol.. Or just get yourself a trigger or an angel that's known for eating softies.. But don't expect it to only eat the xenia and nothing else

I will also try the laser, but I can't remove them all by this way either.
Don't any have got damsels, which eat them? Trigger and angels will not be introduced to my aquarium. For this I have to many special and expensive corals. All the best Esben |

as someone who has been i the hobby for over a decade I'll tell you right now finding natural predation is dumb luck at best. Even if yoo find something that MAY eat it there is only a small chance that they WILL eat it.
Why are you so against putting the work in on the kalk, thats going to be your best bet. |

my big Tiger Cowrie ate Xenia (at night)
-also- IME ALUMINUM BASED (white color) phosphate remover can harm Xenia have you tried the white PO4 remover in a reactor yet?

I have used Rowaphos before, but now I use Xport media po4. Either of them have help me to kill my Xenia. I have never heard about the white Po4 remover. But I hope that Xports media can remove it. In Coral Magazine and from others, I have heard this should be the most effective. If it is right it is to early to say. I can't test any phosphate in my tank, so the po4 must be in a low level.
You can get Xenia for free elsewhere in Denmark, so noone want to buy them. It would be fine if I could put Kalk over all of them. But it is impossible in my tank. There are so many spots, where it is impossible for me have my hands to put kalk on it. My aquarium is pretty much growed elsewhere with corals. ( mostly the corals I want ) But Xenia are everywhere. So I need to get some animals, which can help med. All the best Esben |
