Ich on new tang
i just got a new yellow eye tang and it is already showing signs of minor ich! i have had the fish for a day or two and have done a couple ich treatments... what are the chances of him eventually getting better and getting through this.

I liken the chances to your dog getting rid of fleas without intervention.
ICH can be successfully treated. There is lots of info at your disposal to help you out. Last edited by Sonyardo; 06/02/2013 at 02:46 PM. Reason: additional info |

I have a Powder blue Tang that i got a bit over 3 weeks ago. The moment i got it within a few hours it came down with ich. (keep in mind these guys are notorious for ich. The next day he had about 3 spots on one side and one on the other side. And he was already scratching rocks too. I immediatly did a bunch of research, and then went to the LFS where i got some Garlic and this reef safe ich treatment called "Kordon ich attack". I dont have a QT tank as of now so this reef safe treatment was the only option. the LFS owner and i were both skeptical of the product but i tried it anyway
Within 5 days of feeding mysis in garlic and the kordon treatment, the spots were all gone And they nver returned And he is now a happy and healthy fish that eats everything offered to him If you have caught it early, then it is going to be a lot easier. Excpecially for a yellow tang |

Read up on the disease treatment forum. There's lots of good info there. No "reef safe" ich treatment has been shown to work. Given that ich is a kind of dino just like the zoox in coral, finding something that will kill it but not zoox is extremely unlikely.

In all likely hood the ich was just following its life cycle and fell off the fish and went back to the sand bed to start the life cycle again with more ich.
Garlic and reef safe treatments do nothing for ich. There are three proven methods for eliminating ich. They require the use of a QT. They are treating with copper, using the tank tranfer method, Hyposalinity(very hard to pull off IMO). In addition the tank must remain fishless for at least 10 weeks to allow the ich in the DT to die off from lack of a fish to host on.

I've had good luck in the past with just soaking food in the garlic extract. Last time though it didn't seem to be working so the LFS suggested a cleaner wrasse. He ate it right up. Best practice though is a quarantine tank. Especially if you are already invested in your fish.

Oh ya i forgot to mention, when i got the Powder blue i also got the cleaner wrasse that was in the very same tank as the tang. Not because the tang looked like he had ich (he didnt show any signs at the time) but because i didn't have one and it seamed like a safe backup.
The cleaner will even clean my arm if i stick it in the tank |

There is a lot of misinformation in this thread. Read http://reefcentral.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1985626. There are no proven reef safe cures yet, and it's unlikely they'll be found in the near future. Ich is under the skin, so that cleaner wrasse won't help but make you not see it. Just because a fish doesn't have any spots doesn't mean it doesn't have Ich.

Specifically
11. Just feed the fish well and/or feed it garlic and it will be okay. Not true. Nutrition, foods, vitamins, etc. don't cure an infected fish. An infected fish is sick and is being tortured by the itching and discomfort. It might pull through and acquire resistance or immunity (see above) but the fish is being stressed by having to contend with a parasite. Don't let this happen to the fish. Cure it!! 12. A new cure has been discovered. Very unlikely. If the aquarist thinks they have found a new cure, then have it researched and independently tested. It's easy and cheap. If it is as good as the above 3 tried and true methods then the professional veterinarians, private and public aquariums, fish farms, and I will use it. The aquarist needs to keep the perspective of how devastating this parasite is not to just the hobby but to the whole fish farming industry. Any new way of 100% treatment will make headlines! And "By the way, trophonts are under the skin so cleaner wrasses and cleaner shrimp have no real effect on reducing this parasite." |

I've dealt with ich a couple times in the last year and a half and was successful both times. Stress and health are the two areas I try to address. 1. Stress is a killer of both fish and people, make sure you have an adiquit tank size for your fish, good tank mates with plenty of room for each species, and follow good acclimation practices for your new livestock. 2 make sure you know the proper dietary needs of each species in your tank and feed them appropriately, just brine shrimp will not work. I do use Garlic Guard as an additive to all my foods. Not for the nutrition properties but rather as a feeding stimulator. I first found out about years ago while fishing B.A.S.S. tournements . The addition of garlic oils to a bait would produce 3 to 1 more strikes from not only bass but nearly all fish as scent plays a huge role in acquiring food. Translated to our aquariums the fish eat more food witch makes a healthier fish, and healthy fish don't get sick as much.

Get the QT tank ready and some buckets ready for tank transfer method, it's the simplest, IMO. My tank was "ich free" for 5+ years. Started remodeling it, boom tang shows up with ich. I concluded that it never left the tank.

I'd ask a mod to move this to the disease forum. You're not posting enough info to help and are getting some advice that will just lower the chances that you'll cure it. If this fish wasn't in a QT, you have to worry about all of your fish. Your entire system has ich now, not just one fish.

Keep your fish fat and healthy and they're immune systems will be strong enough to fight it off. It's like the common cold. If you have a compromised immune system, you could die. If you're healthy, you're body will fight it off or prevent you from showing any symptoms in the first place.
