Byropsis and bubble algae attached to turbo snail
About a month ago I had to scrape some hard, elongated bubble algae and byropsis off of a turbo snail. I also dipped the snail shell (not the snail!) in peroxide and scrubbed the shell.
Both algae have reappeared on the shell. The problem is that I had planned to add this turbo to a new tank I'm setting up. I don't want the snail spreading around his problems. What would you do? |

Umm I say take it back where you purchased it even if it means giving it back for free. It's just not worth the risk over a $1 snail.

I'd hate to give anyone else the problem though...

I would go to town with a wire brush on that snails shell. Nothing should be left behind.

Cloak, I did use a wire brush when I scrubbed and nothing visible was left. And I did the peroxide for extra measure. It came back.

I would try the wire brush one more time. If it comes back again, algae growing on a snails shell might be the least of your problems. What exactly are your parameters? It sounds like your water might be nutrient rich.

Did a couple quick tests: Nitrate= 0 Phosphate= 0 (API) This is a tiny 5.5 gallon holding tank that will be broken down in 2 days. Occupants are a pair of greeen banded gobies, two sexy shrimp, 4 mixed snails.
I can do more tests if you like since you were kind enough to inquire... but it may be moot now. Quote:
