are pumps louder if they are in line?

i finally got my tank filled and turned on my return. i have a danner mag drive 12 running in line and it is crazy loud. a low rumble all the time, partly vibrations which i tried the mouse pad trick for, but it still is far too loud. could it just be defective? would it be better if i put it in the sump? everyone online says that their danner is silent. this is not the case. it makes the whole stand rumble.

Mag drive pumps are loud to begin with.I would look at a different pump. The dc pumps are super quiet as well as the tunze silence, sicce syncra, and eheim

If you can put both hands on your pump, squeeze it and it gets dead silent, it's not the pump (more or less)--it's vibrating something. I actually have a powerhead in my tank that is normally dead silent but because it's magnetically attached with a VERY strong magnet it vibrates very loudly.

Some pumps handle their own vibrations well, other need help. Some people use mousepads like you said, but others also use flexible tubing. I had one pump that didn't get quite until I bolted then d*mn thing to a wooden board.

So then it's an internal vibration issue...you either have a defective pump or the shaft and prop aren't seated properly. That's actually a GOOD thing...it's easier to fix than a vibrating 240g tank.
