DIY LED lights

I was looking at some videos and I came across this video where "Joey" made DIY leds...I'm not very knowledgable about LEDs as yet but i'm curious what is the difference between 1w and 5w and secondly if I happen to use this video to create my DIY Led's..how high do I mount them? How do I know the amount of leds equalent to brightness needed? any help on this would be great..

My currect setup is as follows:

I have t5 setup setup on 90 gallon aquarium...48x18x24 i believe
a couple of corrals, blue, yellow, brown tangs 2 clows 4 chromis and 2 gobies.
I don't have any plans to put corals..but I may down the road
