over skimming?
Hi. I have a 55 gallon tank and I put a coralife skimmer rated for 220 gallon in it. the tank is for quarantine. Is there such a thing as over skimming your tank and if it bad for your tank. I have a 125 gallon tank and I am thinking of putting a skimmer there rated 300 gallons.

IMO the coralife skimmers are way over rated anyway so on a 55 gal it will be fine.

Is it bad to have a skimmer 3 x the size of your tank?

you have a 165 gallon Coralife skimmer?
Coralife skimmers are vastly overrated. Personally, I would replace it with something else.

Get a well balanced skimmer to fit your tank. 3x will not be able to make a head so it will be a poor performer.

I don't trust the ratings system, as different manufacturers will rate similar skimmers wildly different. Coralife doesn't offer specs of their skimmer such as body diameter, neck diameter, or air draw so it's pretty much impossible to tell what size it would work best for. The only thing I can guess at is from the actual dimensions of the product that the body size is right around 5", which for a 55g quarantine tank should be sufficient. I would keep it until it dies, a quarantine tank doesn't need to be squeaky clean, unless you are using it to QT corals as well.

IMO, I don't think you can over skim a tank. Perhaps if you had a 50 gal tank and used a skimmer rated for 1000 gal then you would be over skimming.. I would get the biggest beast you can afford and fit into your sump.

K. Thanks guys. It is actually the coralife 220 I am using for this 55 gallon tank. I think I will keep it for now. I am honestly not happy with this skimmer but I guess it is not bad for a 55 gallon.

This... Be cautious of it it can and will ( a lot) overflow. Those skimmers are prone to getting the floor wet running hob. Or just plain not working without constant tweaking and having a perfect level with a good ATO..
