Berlin Airlift 60 skimmer in a nano?

I got a Berlin Airlift 60 today for free and i want to see if it will fit in the back of my innovative marine 8 gallon. It did, but only if i took the bottom off. Is the bottom necessary or can i just leave the tube in my sump?

You're probably okay. Might get a few extra bubbles in the tank.
