MP60 vs 6255

I'm still planning my 300 gallon (72x36x27) SPS upgrade and I can't decide between Ecotech or Tunze. I assume either option would be sufficient but which one would be ideal? What would you choose and why?

I considering either:

(2) MP60s and (2) MP40s

OR

(2) 6255s and (2) 6105s

I have enough information on MP40s vs 6105s but there isn't any comparisons between MP60s and 6255s.

Tunze are silent. I'd go with two 6255's and two 6095's for plenty of silent flow.

If you go with Vortechs you won't need more than (2) MP60s. If you don't have a controller defiantly go with the Vortechs. Some people complain that the wet sides don't last, I have had mine for over a year and have had no issues, preventive maintenance is the key.

I am planning an upgrade to the same size tank as yours and will get a second MP60 for the build, I much prefer them to the MP40s

+1. You only need 2 MP60 for a 300g tank. That's what I have on my 375g and at max setting they blow all my large fish around including my 12" gigantic French angel.

Also, mp60 is much stronger than tunze 6255.

Two 6255s would be more than enough for a 6' 300 gallon SPS tank. As for which pump is stronger, that depends entirely on which method of measurement is used. When viewed side by side the 6255 certainly appears to move more water, but there is currently no simple method of quantifying the difference. It's probably safe to say that both pumps could provide enough for flow for you and that you can make your decision based on the other differences between the pumps.

I would disagree with this statement. Flow isn't an easy thing to measure and you need to take into account the total amount of water moved, the radius of water moved, how far the wave is propogated, etc. Both pumps move enough water.

Ultimately, it depends on other factors, including noise, whether you want cords hanging out versus parts of the pump hanging out, etc.

While 2 6255s or 2 mp60s would likely be plenty of flow initially, it also depends on your reef structure and positioning of the units.

This is my "totally out of left field for the day" post, but have you considered a wavebox over either of those? I know that this is not help, so sorry, but it might be better for you.

Have you had the opportunity to view them side by side? Any video? I've been trying to find a direct comparison and the only thing that I have found is a 6255 vs a MP40.

Having had vortechs for years I moved to tunze's and will be using them from now on. I find the ability to aim the flow with Tunze's a HUGE advantage. Vortechs may provide a wider and (maybe) more powerful flow the lack of ability to aim them really made me turn away from them. Much more options with Tunzes and the quiet factor is so much better.

If you're head set on vortechs, I'd go with a MP60 and then a couple tunze streams to aim flow around the tank.

My next tank is 72x36 or 72x48 and I will be using Tunze. I have used both 6095 and MP40 in my current tank.

I would base my decision on my need/desire for silence and whether or not I had a controller. I have an MP40 on my 75 gallon tank. It isn't loud, but the sound is certainly noticeable when the house is quiet. I also didn't have a controller when I made the purchase.

My only issue with it so far is that while it is easy to get the wet side close to aligned, getting it perfect requires a quiet house and several minutes or more most of the time. I'm probably going to get another MP40 for this tank, but when I go big (planning on about 300 gallon), I will likely go with Tunze since my house will be much quieter when the kids move out and I won't have to worry about potential grandkids knocking a pump off the side.

Another thing to consider is how the tank will be viewed. MP's are less versatile in where they can be placed. At least, I don't think one would get good results by placing one near a corner since they can't be aimed.

I would stay away from the MP pumps. I had 5 that started heating up and making noise and the next phase is more noise and pump locking up. Check my other posts on the MP pumps. There seems to be a lot of people with the same problem. They are also not very attractive hanging on the outside of the glass. I have 3 on my tank now and wish I never got started on these pumps.
