Fish limit question

What would be the general number of fish that could be kept safely in a 29 gallon biocube with protein skimmer.

depending on the size, but staying with fish that get full grown around 3-4" I would say about 4-5

i have a 29g hqi cube. in it lives 2 snowflake clowns, 1 purple firefish, 1 cherub angel, 1 orange spotted goby, 1 dottyback and several corals. all of my fish are very small, not much over an inch except for the firefish and goby. they all get along fine, i've never once seen any violence.

And you plan to keep them all in there?

well yeah, unless i see squabbling. i do weekly water changes faithfully, my params are always fine. none of the fish are stressed, i have lots of hiding places but i have never seen any of them not out and about.

Fish requirements and compatibility are very specific to the type of fish. Based on the comment you just made you aren't really asking about general fish limits, but if YOU can have another fish. Which is good because SW tanks don't really have that X-inches of fish rule like they pass off in FW.

Rather than the generic question, let us know what you have now (and how big they are already) and what you're thinking about getting. Then maybe we can get you some advice that's a little more tailored to what you REALLY want to know!

Good to know! I had always thought there was the inches rule here in SW.

So you have 2 fish that are basically bottom dwellers (sit on the rocks and sand) and scavengers and 1 fish that probably hides in the rocks. I'd say you'd be good for another fish, provided it's something that hangs out in the water column. I'd be leary of another blenny...I've never had a Canary Blenny but I looked it up on Live Aquaria and 5" max and moderate aggression would keep me from getting another blenny.

You probably don't need to feed the tank a whole lot so as long as you're keeping on water changes to keep the nitrates down I'd look into a swimmer. Maybe a clownfish or chromis?

Did you have anything in mind?

FsuNole...People tend to avoid that type of rule in this hobby. In FW you have your "comminuty" fish and "aggresive" fish. In our reefs it's more about territory, compatibility in confinement, habits (like to move rock, etc.) and how much they eat and poop to produce waste and push the nitrates up.

Actually the canary fang blenny is a swimmer. That's all it does is swim. And no I hadn't anything in mind.

Ok...like I said...never had one. Good to know though. I supposed I shouldn't be surprised since he doesn't have the obvious pectoral fin "feet" like most blennies. Most blennies bodies aren't suited for the water column for more than a few seconds.
