Question my corals closed up

im not sure why but all my inverts keep dying

Salinity 1.025
ph 8.2
ammonia 0
nitrite 0
nitrate 40ppm

^it's a lot better used to be 120+

30 gallon
I have about 1 1/2 live sand bed
40+ lbs of live rock
I used filtered tap water
going to invest in an RO/DI unit soon

my corals were open and doing well, now they stay closed
all my inverts started dying off too

I'm not sure what the problem is

using filtered tap water is like playing Russian roulette. you don't know what bad stuff could be in the water. The filtering ain't going to cut it. I have copper pipes in my house and all the way out to the street. got to start with pure water.

I never had good luck until I went to RODI water. After lights, skimmer and flow, I think it's the most important investment to make. Just think about that by not using RODI water....you are adding things you have to just turn around and get out of your tank. Why put it in to begin with. Try doing a test with a TDS meter and see how your water scores. That might open your eyes to what is going in your tank.

Tap water aside, high nitrate or anything over 5ppm will start taking inverts out.

How much deeper would the ocean be if it didn't have sponges?
