Needle in reef
Ok, I'm a bit concerned. I was doing some maintenance tonight on my 150g reef as I'm going on holidays next week. I decided to get out the syringe and lemon juice and take care of some aptasia. Well the needle got clogged and I tried clearing it out with some water, the needle blew of the syringe (which is crazy becuase it was a leur lock syringe) and now I can't find it. I have searched the area surrounded the tank with no luck and I can't see it in the tank anywhere. It is small and made of surgical steel. What harm will it do if it is by chance in the tank?
I recall a comment by PaulB about metal in the tank not being such huge deal... I'm hoping I didn't just read that wrong as the last thing I want to do it rip the tank apart right before I go away. |

I don't think it's the end of the world. It's likely stainless anyway. If it's not, it should dissolve in the saltwater fairly quick. Unless you have a 2 gallon aquarium, I think you will be fine. Just be careful when you rearrange the rocks as you don't want to get stuck by that thing after it's been in your tank for any length of time.

Well the tank is 150g, so I'm hoping it's big enough to not cause a disaster, I'm just paranoid as I don't want anything bad to happen while I'm away.
Thank you! |

Needles on most syringes are surgical stainless steel. The do eventually rust and break down, but the amount of metal is very minute. Newer safety syringes are designed to "self destruct" to prevent reuse and for safety reasons. If you push the plunger all the way in, there is a spring in the hub of the needle which pushes the needle out of the hub. If you take the hub off, the spring and mechanism fall apart, and the syringe becomes essentially useless.

Yes I have seen those newer ones, this is not one of them. I got it from a vet clinic, they do not use that type. But good to know this won't crash my tank!

Lol i have lost like 10 freaking blades in my tank and i am to lazy to take apart my rockwork, they have been there for 4-5 years now, some, even used a little antena magnet to take them out and got some out, nothing will happen, its just a little needle in a big tank, so dont worry and enjoy the ride

A needle, you dropped a whole needle in your tank? OMG, call out the National Guard.
OK, forget the needle, If I recovered all the metal I lost in my reef, I could build a 1955 Oldsmobile. Needles are fine. Your urchin may find it and think it is part of his cousin.
