Artificial coral & bacteria
I'm a newby to the community and starting a 118g bow front FOWLR tank with significant 3D artificial coral glued on to the overflow box. While I will have live rock on the bottom, I wonder if the artificial coral will develop bacteria as well?

Hello and welcome to RC
yes, bacteria will colonize all surfaces in the system, glass, rocks, decoration, heaters and so on. |

Hi and welcome to the community. That looks like more of a half circle then a Bowfront but I digress....
I'm doubtful that your artificial coral would have the same bio-filtration effects as your live rock will. Also, be watchful of it degrading over time. I've read some people having issues with some of the artificial stuff breaking down. Do you know what it's made of? You'll still get bacteria and coralline algae growing on it but its probably not very porous and likely has limited area for bacteria |

You're right, it is half circle. I do not know the material, but your hit the nail in the head regarding my concerns about it providing any level of bio-filtration.
