Angel Fish and corals
I'm running a 180 FOWLR and would like to start back with corals. My only problem is I have 3 fish that are prone to eating them. I know each fish is different... here they are:
1. Flame Angel 2. Regal Angel 3. Banner Fish As far as corals...what can I grow that is overall not on their menu? Softies? Acros? Any help with this would be greatly appreciated. |

I've had a flame and it was ok with all my corals. Bannerfish (Heniocus sp.?), I believe like SPS corals. Regals...I have no clue, but LA states that they are not reef safe. LA and Blue Zoo have pretty good profiles on their fishes.

Which banner fish? Heniochus diphreutes is reef safe. Regal and flame angels are hit or miss, but better than many other angelfish when it comes to corals. Mostlikely mushrooms and SPS will be safe. Softies are hit or miss, any fleshy LPS will be lunch and probably zoas. Best to just try frags of it and see what is touched or not. Good luck! You could always setup a smaller reef tank! Have the best of both worlds!

It's the reef safe banner but ate my acans when I had them... So I guess the banner was hit or miss as well. Just looking for some color in the tank.

I had flame that did fine in a mixed reef. I added a regal on a whim and it nearly destroyed a wellsophyllia i a little under a week. Flames are with caution. The regal i know will eat lps corals like brains. Im not sure on the bannerfish. Ive seen them in beautiful reefs. So id say with caution.

The typical bannerfish that's commonly scene in the trade is heniochus acuminatus which isn't reef safe. The reef safe Heniochus diphreutes is very similar looking, it takes a skilled eye to distinguish between the two. Regardless, you'll never know anything until you try, just be prepared to remove corals.
