So I have a Tang

The tang is healthy, beautiful and perfect in every way except that he is extremely aggressive, and aggressive and aggressive!!!. He doesn't mess with corals, damsels or clowns anything else is simply a victim waiting to happen. Does anyone know of a way to calm him down? Right now he's in my quarantine tank and unfortunately his next move will be to the fish store for credit because I can't figure how to calm him down. FYI his usual home was a 110 gallon display reef tank.

i've been told tangs are the last fish to get since they can be aggressive. when did you get it in comparison when you bought your other fish? i have a yellow tang that I got last and he is great, not aggressive at all! maybe you should wait until your close to ending stocking your tank and then get one. just my .02

This. Some tangs are more aggresive than others and tank size matters.

Just like above, what type? Also they can very just like human. Not every tang is going to be aggressive.

Is it brand new to the Display?

I have a yellow tang that was one of the first things i added to my display. He was fine when i put small clowns from another set up in there but showed a little aggression towards my blue tang and humu trigger when added. but after a day or so they got along just fine. It was more of a territorial type of aggression.

Everyone has a different personality. Could be territoriality until he/she adjusts. Sometimes you get a puppy-dog Queen Trigger or a terrifying Yellow Tang. Don't feel bad if you have to bring him back, these things happen. It would've been helpful to know what variety of tang you're dealing with, but the info won't change the course of action here.

Same as far as wanting to know what type of tang, but can't you reset their territorial instinct by leaving them in QT for a week and then putting them back in the display? It would be like they are the new kid in the club all over again.

He's just a little bigger than the rest. At the moment the decision is to just trade him in to the lfs, breaks my heart to have to do it but I think its cruel to have him in a 10 gallon for too long.

I can't do It, I simply can't turn him Him so the plan Is to get a 210 gallon Upgrade and give big yellow the 110 with a few clowns, puffer and cuc. Simply amazing how we come to love and care for these fish and the crazy things we do for them...

got to say that's pretty drastic course of action to cope with a problem fish. we all have our personal motivations, and if they lead to having more tanks, than all the better. (don't buy with credit.)

Print pics of larger yellow tangs and post on your tank facing inward. He should calm down. Then remove them one by one. I have to post pics of big sohols occasionally when mine starts to cross the line.

petco had the $1 per gallon sale so I picked up 2 40 gallon breeders, One for my sons room and one extra for emergency, Tang should be good In that Untill he gets another chance. Soon I'll start setting up a 210 I'll put the tang In last and see what happens.

I have had a powder blue tang in my tank an he was fine. I put a jawfish in and the tang has gone crazy after all the fish in tank. He has nipped tail fins off of one of my firefish. i like the idea of posting pictures on ouside of tank.

Have you considered trying an acclimation box in the tank?

Put a piece of eggcrate into the qt, separating him from the others. You can put it lengthwise to let him run.
