Everything you need to know about sumps can be found from that site, which was in the search result suggested above.

55G Sump

This is about as simple as it gets. I have added a pic of mine. I used 1/4 in plastic I purchased at Lowes for 30 bucks, and I used marine silicone I purchased from amazon for 10. I had Lowes pre cut the plastic sheet for me. I added the skimmer and return so you can get an idea of the set up. The middle that is empty will be the refuge. This is an old 55Gal tank I bought off craigs list for 20 bucks. So the entire thing might have cost me 65 max.

On the silicone make sure you get aquarium based silicone don't use the stuff for boats, bathrooms kitchens, etc.

hub81 is a great example of a simple sump. See how there are 5 baffles total? Find out the optimal water depth for your skimmer, and use that as your deciding factor for baffle size. Cut all baffles the same size for simplicity. The last chamber on the right is for your return pump --- the smaller this chamber is, the faster your pump can run dry -- keep that in mind. I've always used ge silicone type 1 (for windows and doors) for glass work. Also consider having glass baffles cut at a local shop, as siliconing plastic/arylic in place can be troublesome.

Be sure to read melevs website on sumps as there is much you can learn for future re-designs. Good luck with it.

Thanks, I will say that the depth in mine is for more water volume, the skimmer actually sets on an adjustable platform. With the depth I use for my sump the return will empty about 12 Gal into the show tank. The reason for this is because if the overflow was to clog my show tank can hold 16 gal before it overflows all over the floor. I don't fill the sump to the top just incase the return stops working the sump will hold enough water to go just under the overflow so it doesn't overflow the sump. You don't want to learn that the hard way with an indoor saltwater swimming pool.

ty guys

ya that's my biggest problem right now is that my sump is never stable im always adjusting because its all affected by evap.... ( no baffles ) filter sock stops bubbles but id like to have no sock as I get lazy and neglect changing it and it just nitrate trap... so ty again that sump looks like what im going to do

what do you use for ato in your sump I have air pressure one but I suppose it doesn't matter as I I think the evap all shows in the return section right?

and ty for the melevs link was a great site I learned a lot fom and still reading ...lots of info.. ty for links guys
