What are you planning on placing in the aquarium? I quit using skimmers about 10 years ago (not saying they're bad at all, I just stopped using them) and didnt have any negative results so dont feel that you MUST run one. Detritus is typically removed mechanically (such as during a water change) but I prefer to keep things as natural as possible and like to use some sort of clean up crew to do the dirty work like a cucumber.

Most fish waste just rots away, that's why you have a bio-filter.

Skimmers arent necessary on a tank smaller than 40 gallons. They dont hurt but I wouldnt bother on a 24. Having a larger tank and a ten gallon I get carried away on my nano. I end up doing 3 or 4 gallons and thats 50%. I went Bb on my nano I just couldnt get the siphon to all the sand without taking out the rock.
