Pump

Wondering if anyone is using or thoughts about using pond pump for return. I'm thinking of using the laguna maxflo 2400 pump for my return.

I use one for my water changes. Pumps water from the basement but not very strong. I am going to guess that people don't use these for return because they are huge for how much water they push and it starts sucking air in about 4 inches of water, which could be a problem in a sump.

Pond pumps sometimes have metal parts inside that will corrode in salt water.

A lot of people have used the Laguna for return pumps without issues. The Askoll/Hagen/Laguna are all the same basic pump and have been used in skimmers for years. Fluval has a version of the same pump that is rated for salt water use, though I have never heard of anyone having an issue with the Laguna.

Yah I believe they are made differently. I think over time with the saltwater it will corrode and malfunction.

The cord length is the difference, the pond ones have a 12 or 15' cord or something like that.

Its gotta be like the mag drives and the pond master. I accidentally bought the pond master and emailed them. They said they are excactly the same pump just the cord is longer. The odd part is if the pond master only difference is a longer cord why is it cheaper.

From seeing the insides of many pond pumps that have stainless steel shafts rather than a ceramic one.

The info was from another WWIII on the topic and it was heavily in Favor of the not using pond pumps for saltwater use.

The argument was also for external pond pumps as well. I will see if I can find the discussion
