Why is protein skimmer collection cup neck SO long for?

Not sure if this is the case with all protein skimmers....

But my Tunze 9002 has a VERY long collection neck on the collection cup.

I just opened it up and I see brown colored bubbles and water trying desperately to make its way up the long neck of the cup (and up over into the cup) and it's struggling.

Would you guys recommend I take a dremel and shorten the length of the neck of the collection cup so that the skimmate can have an easier time getting into the cup?

I'm fearful that there won't be enough skimmate and the crap the skimmer pulled out of the water will just fall back into the water column because it cannot reach the top of the cup.

The only way I can do that is to physically raise or lower the entire skimmer.....however, I set the skimmer at the factory-reccomended water level (the marked line on the skimmer being about 1/2" above the actual water line).

If I were to try to adjust....would you suggest I raise or lower the skimmer into the water column?

I missed that it was a Tunze, yea just lower it slightly, maybe a half inch and see if that makes a difference . Its better to have it not skim than overflow.

That's what it's supposed to do.
