Filter media questions

I just bought chem pure elite for my 8 gallon biocube was wondering if anyone uses this. I bought it off of recommendation from lfs. The reason why I ask is he told me to take straight out the container and put it in bad idea needed rinsed turned my water black I immediately took it out and rinsed it clean put it back in the water cleared in about 20 minutes. That beening said I now dout what he said what are your thoughts?

Im running my regular cube filter in first chamber the overflows on to media bag (took bio balls out)
