New carpet, around the tank
Just wondering if anyone has ever gotten new carpet and left their tank in place for the people to just cut around? What did it look like after? I am going from 'regular' carpet you might see in 95% of homes to a more flat commercial type carpet. I have already figured out how they will cut around it to just have one seam. I am just wondering if anyone has done that and how did the carpet tacked around your stand look?
I would take down the tank but I just really, really don't want to lose a bunch of coral and that is what would happen if I did that based on how it has grown in and how my rocks are stacked. I cannot think of a problem but figured I would ask to see if anyone has experience and any issues I might not have thought of. I am just re-carpeting one room and doing hardwood or vinyl for the rest of the house. If I was doing the whole house in this new carpet or hardwood I would likely take down the tank but I am not. It's OCD reasons, I just need carpet in this 1 room and it has to be flat commercial. The room has been measured and the carpet people did not seem to worry about the tank, so just posting to make sure no one has done it and regretted it. I will not be having a new tank for a long time. The room is too small for bigger and I personally don't want smaller. If something happened and I wanted to get out of the hobby I would just revert to freshwater and get some cichlids. |

I had a slight flood (not tank related) and had to replace my carpet. wasn't going to try to move my 120 gal tank. installers cut around the tank. the new carpet was the same color. can't notice it but if I ever moved the tank it would probably show.

Obviously the drawback here is matching up the carpet under the tank with the new carpet if the tank is ever moved. I would keep a extra section of new carpet, the area of the base of the stand on hand, so that if I did move the tank, you could just replace the old carpet.

I did it. No way you will ever match with the extra carpet. Dirt, foot traffic, and UV light will all change the color and appearance of the existing carpet. This doesn't even take into account the inevitable spill and salt spray on the carpet.
If I had to do it over again, I still would not move my tank. Ken |

We did it, cut around 120g and a year later moved and used the extra they left to replace it and had a carpet installer do the work and you couldn't tell unless you knew where to look.

There could be a difference if there is pad under the existing carpet and you are laying new carpet that is thinner there will be a height difference there. They should be able to edge around it with a carpet knife and go under it like any other trim in your home. (laid carpet with my father many times)

I plan to do it and keep a piece to patch in down the road if the tank ever goes. I know there would be a bit of a difference but i think it would still be close. Planning on cutting the carpet out under my new stand, but not ready to replace the rest of the room yet.

Thank you guys for all your experiences. It went very well! The only hitch, like whosurcaddie said, was the carpet I was getting was commercial and was meant to glue straight down with no pad. When the installer arrived he worried that there would be about a half inch difference and it would show under the stand. We decided to just leave the existing pad and glue the commercial carpet to it. Worked fine, cannot even tell there is different carpet under the tank. There is a little by the ground the looks like it might be the old carpet in this pic...but it is just the stand. I need to touch it up with paint. I am very pleased No judging though, seeing as I went with purple I LOVE it btw
If I move the tank I will probably just get new carpet again. I am not planning on going anywhere soon and I have MAJOR OCD.....so I would never be able to stand having a patch because it would show the borders......however if the tank breaks or I want to have something different I will just have freshwater or have it be a place for my cockatiels to hang out. I like to switch up their houses. Honestly I don't see myself not having a SW tank here for at least a decade anyways. It is faaaar too entertaining to watch and have right next to my bed.
