No, that's the natural growth pattern. It has no polyp extension. How long have you had it?

I see a fake plant in the background. Your friend needs to check his water parameters because that is a very unhappy montipora.

Montipora for sure, i agree with all the above, if it is turning white it could be bleaching. how close to the light is this coral ? if it is very close try lowering it a bit or give it a bit of shade for a few days. If its one month old in your friends tank, what type of light did it come from and what type of light is it under now ? if those are plastic plants in the tank you might want to consider checking tank parameters for sure. I have many montipora in my tank under two 150 watt halides and they are doing very good at about 7 inches under water and my lights are 9 inches above. many are growing great at 16 inches under water. hope that helps you some.

It is about a foot under water and the lights are 8 inches above the water. The lighting is a dual t-5 aquaticlife.

Wow not even close to enough light for SPS. I wish people would research before buying this stuff and not knowing proper care.

Looks dead, judging by the fake plant, this tank should not be keeping any corals.
