CREE Lumia 5.2 - tempted

Anybody have experience with this chip? I'm torn between a DIY build with this or a Kessil A360.

i like the look of the new lumia 5.2. the spectrum is good, it uses good leds, and you have 5 channels of control.
lumia 5.2- $112.50
5 mean well LDD drivers( 2 1000s 3 700s)- $36.65
5up LDD board- $13.25
250w 48v 5.2a power supply- $45.00
6" makers heatsink- $24.96
coralux storm led controller- $65.43

so for 297.79 plus shipping of parts you will have a light with built in control and great spectrum, or for 399 you get a light with good spectrum and only manual dimming (unless you have a controller) and no sunrise/sunset feature without a controller. seems like a good setup to me.

That's a good breakdown. I do already have a controller so there's no added cost there. These are decisions I love to make as a reefer

What I like about it are the clustered LEDs.

Yes. I abhor disco effect so the only LEDs I'm considering are these clustered types. Radions are the only separate diode fixture I consider, since the chips are packed so tightly. Even then, I can still make out some disco.

I say do the lumia just for the extra control that you don't get with the kessil. Not to mention the fun in DIY.

I think there's actually a different type of disco effect in these sort of multi-chips. I used a Kessil A350 and A150, if you have any light spill or strong surface movement, you'll see an intense monocolored shimmer. It's more MH like (except way more blue than even a 20k radium) instead of the rainbow discos you see in spaced out LEDs.

Yes. Shimmer is great, disco (essentially multiple shimmer in differing colors) sucks.

Good, color-balanced pics! It's so hard to judge LED spectrum without seeing in person.

I think with as much customization as there is available here, you won't really get a true what does this look like in real life photo since some people more blue or more white.

I'll be getting one soon to run through testing, but my sister is too stingy with her DSLR. I was able to steal it, though, for the original Lumia and one of my evil clusters. I wonder how the 5.2 will stack up against that evil cluster, both are about 70w (the evil cluster was the Bridgelux BXRA-40E1350-B-00 at ~31w and four Luxeon M RB at ~11.5w each).

I am very curious about these units too, just kind of confused on how to power them... they say you can power 2 with 1 set of drivers or one 48v power supply... not sure.

Would love to hear from people who try the new one.

So thats basically everything you need to DIY? I really want to try to DIY my own LED fixture. Its a bit intimidating though.

Thanks,

Are you getting a pre release unit or are they shipping soon? Either way, I'm looking forward to what you find.

They were apparently supposed to start shipping earlier this week, but still haven't yet. Dunno what the holdup is on them.

Seems like they are in stock now... Just placed an order for one unit. Would like to test it out before deciding to go with it for my new tank
