flame angel?

Ive seen flame angels in reef aquariums, but Ive read that they are not reef safe? Any truth to this? I have a tank that has lps, sps, zoas, zenia, and a couple of clams.

Every fish is different and you will always run a risk of it nipping or completely eating corals. If you search you will find dozens of threads with peoples flame angel eating corals and dozens where they are model citizens.

Some will aggressively nip at corals and some don't at all. They are very strange in that regard. IME they are susceptible to disease, though.

They are one of my favorite fish, and had them in a FOWLR tank, but when I started adding corals I found that the four I tried during that time had/developed a taste for something in my tank, the last one was clam mantle. So, it's a crap shoot at best.

mine goes a long time without messing with anything, but about once a month or two, i ll catch him doing some pruning. if you have concerns with them, i recommend a fish with a better track record. very unpredictable.

Take a look at the Genicanthus Genus.

i've kept a flame for some time, no problem.

not exactly a model citizen, likes to chase other fish around, but leaves all the corals alone.

search for the flame angel thread here on reefcentral, tons of info, there are also, I think 4 different kinds of flame angels that live in different regions , so it can be difficult to get a model citizen sometimes

Had mine about a year in my reef with softies, LPS and SPS and no problem nipping at corals. Chasing smaller fish is another subject....personally, not sure id have a reef tank without an angel in it....love'em!!

As far as other angels, I have had good luck with my coral beauty. He's a Fiji one so he is much more colorful then the traditional purple you see

I just lost mine a few of months ago (it went carpet surfing) that had been a model citizen for five years. I would consider them at best a 50% chance of being reef safe.

I had one for over a year with no problems. Kept him well fed and didn't bother a thing.
