Anemone Help!
I was at Petco and I spoke to the salesman. He said that the anemone they had, one of two different species they were selling, was compatible with the clownfish, which I have. I forgot to ask him what type of anemone it was. I it has a reddish-orange body with whitish-lavender arms and white dots at the end of the arms. Any idea what type of anemone I have?
It took me an hour to get home from the store. I then put the bag with the anemone in it with a cup of water from the tank. I let it sat for 10 minutes and then opened the bag. I let the cup of tank water sit with the opened bag for another ten minutes then added in another cup of tank water. I then let it sit for another 10 minutes. After that I placed the anemone in the tank on a piece of live rock. It has been an hour and the anemone has not anchored to the rock and moves his arms very little. Is this normal? Thanks, Paul |

They don't move their arms. The flow does. All they do is inflate and deflate them. (That's not totally true, but mostly)
Secondly it may be in shock. anemones really need to be drip acclimated. There is a section of this forum about anemones I strongly suggest you read it. http://www.reefcentral.com/forums/forumdisplay.php?f=36 Last edited by Percula_Clown; 02/15/2014 at 05:30 PM. |

We'd need a picture to identify... Well, not "we" because I'd likely have no idea, but someone else

8wks and your LFS sold you that?................... They are going to have fun with you.
You told them your tank was only 8 wks? That the first question they should of asked you.

looks like a rittri but hard to say without a pic of the base, and one of the mouth.
on an 8 week old tank though I would strongly suggest bringing it back. these anemones are difficult even for experienced reefers. what are your water parameters? number please size tank? what lights? what flow?

.25 ammonia means you have not cycled the tank completly and shouldn't have any livestock in the tank yet.
also those lights arn't nearly enough for any anemone, maybe soft corals only.

Are you talking about the one in your avatar? If so, I'd like a better pic of it please. Or do a google search for majano anemone. Those aren't good in a reef tank.

Not yet, but I'll try later today to get a pic. The anemone has white arms with purplish-scarlet tips and a light purple body.

sounds like a condy, but still not enough light to support it.

The anemone I gave back to Petco was a Super Colored Long Tentacle Anemone (Macrodactyla doreensis)
Edit: After doing more research, it could by a condy, but not sure. All the specs match to the Super Colored Long Tentacle Anemone, from what what I have read. Last edited by DexterGSP; 02/16/2014 at 03:39 PM. Reason: info |

you don't want sun light hitting your tank
I think what shifty was saying that even with your description of the nem it might not be a condy.

No, unfortunately not. Are you able to return the other anemone? It may be the best bet for the health of the animal, until your system is ready and you've gained a little more experience. Any amount of ammonia in your tank can be very harmful to your inhabitants.
One piece of advice that is helpful for every tank owner is to research and know exactly what you're putting in your tank before you buy it. |

bought my first anemone - a condy when my tank was only 2 months old - had to return it - later brought it back home and died shortly after.
then we bought 4 bubble tip anemones @ 2.5 months old. and they have been doing good in the tank (until recently because i switched to LED) - our parameters have not been all that stable. but we have good lights. 150w halide - now LED. i would suggest upgrading your light and feeding your anemone. and get a bubble tip next time :-) |
