If you love them, get them. Just consider their potential to grow and incorporate that into where you put them. If you don't want them covering you entire reef base, keep them in a place the can be easily fragged and removed. You may find you frag them, keep the frag and sell the mother colony... But to answer your question, they can grow rapidly and invade areas you don't want them in, if you don't consider where you place them...

Isolate them on a rock. Don't have them near anything they can attach to.

I love GSP, but do not want in my system. Yes, it will eventually take over and you will regret ever putting any in your system IMO. How I currently feel about my diamond goby.

If you surround them with mushrooms they will not spead.

Put them on a rock that you won't mind if you have to remove and frag the entire rock. Then, you replace that rock, attach a frag and start over...

They are like dandelions. Same thing with pulsing xenia. All pretty and cool to look at until your rock live rock is covered in them.

I use Xenia as a cash crop.
Surround it with rock rubble, let it spread and trade with the LFS for supplies.

I really like mine and I recently rearranged rocks to make an island for it. It only spreads from where it is - I mean it's not like bubble algae or aptaisia which will start popping up all over the tank. And it peels off very easily. I don't think it's an issue as long as you keep an eye on it and contain it to where you want it.

I used to use Xenia as a cash crop but it took over my tank to the point I had to tear down and restart. Now when I see any xenia popping up (I kept my SPS) I hit it with kalk paste.

GSP was almost as bad but I was able to keep it in check by ripping out rocks and redoing rockwork.

Both are the devil in my opinion...

If I were to do it in my new build I would just keep it isolated. I have seen some neat builds with it cover the back walls of tanks.

A small rock on the sandbed is a perfect place for GSP, it won't grow over sand at least not in the last 2 years. (medium grade)

I have my main colony seperated and another colony on the sandbed. I get fugly frag tiles and ugly rocks and put them next to the sandbed colony. In about 3 weeks I have mats of star polyps growing on them.

Oh, sorry, pretty obscure I guess ....

Old joke about getting cats to eat all the mice ..... too many cats, so dogs to get rid of all the cats .... too many dogs .... and so on ... eventually you just have elephants .....

Personally I've not had problems with GSP, but many times with plagues of mushrooms ... so your comment just struck me as ironic.

I had them in my old setup, I put them on as flat of rock I could find, when they grew to large I would just cut them with the scissors. I never let that rock near the glass or other rock as it will spread, but it sure is nice to watch in a tank as it sways in the water.

Some people purposely get it to grow on the back glass of their tank, I would never do this myself but others have.

My new tank build will have a carpet of GSP instead of sand, going to use acrylic rods to prop my rocks off of the glass in hopes of containing it to just the glass itself.

I put a small frag on a rock island in the front corner of my tank, it adds amazing eye popping green and will not spread over sand i love it, if you have bare bottom tank it will spread everywhere though :S
