cycling

Hello. I have 36 gal oceanic cube and it's been. Up for about 2 months and my ammonia level has risen. To 1.0 ppm and nitrite is at .50 ppm. and I am using ro water and doing water changes weekly there are 2 clown fish 1 snail and 4 crabs. So could it have just started cycling. And I haven't added any chemical's. And am using a api canister filter.

Usually tanks are completely cycled within 2 months. When did you introduce the fish and hermits? If you didn't start off with an ammonia source, that's why it may be taking so long to cycle.

For future reference, a fishless cycle is better. You can do this with some live rock with some decay on it or a dead shrimp and you don't have to stress out or possibly kill, the fish. Don't plan on adding anything else until you're ammonia and nitrite are reading zero. When they are, do a water change and check your nitrate. If it's within a reasonable range, proceed from there.
