Herbie siphon size

Hello. I have a RR tank drilled with 2 1.5" drains, one for the siphon and one for the overflow, and 2 0.75" returns. These are all centered along the back of the bottom panel, so the water will drain out the bottom of the tank. My sump can only handle a max of 500gph, and I'm shooting for 300gph, my tank is 100 gal. As you can see I have oversized drains. Instead of using 1.5" PVC for the drains' plumbing I was going to use 1" PVC. The vertical drop is 44", but there will be a few 45s and a gate valve. Does anyone think that this configuration will negatively impact the dynamics of the Herbie? Thank you.

I use a single 3/4" drain (gate valved) and 1" emergency pushing about 300gph through 4' of head with an Eheim 1260 return pump. That said, I believe you plan should work but you will have to throttle back the drain to maintain a 300gph sump flow with 2 1" full syphon drains feeding. Might infringe on the silence of your system.

Thank you for your reply. Your system is essentially what I'm after. In fact I was just looking at the Eheim 1260 last night. To clarify only one drain will be used as a siphon, and the other for the emergency drain. IYO do you think that I should scale down to a 3/4", from the 1.5" bulkhead, instead of 1", tin order to minimize the noise increase? Or is just the fact that any scaling down from the 1.5" bulkhead going to impact the silence of the system. Thank you.

Go w/1 - More "headroom" and flexibility for expansion down the road.". You are going to have to throttle the flow w/gate valve either way. It shouldn't affect the noise. The drain gets noisy whenever it starts sucking air, and when you throttle the flow w/a valve it only reduces the chance for air sucking.

Thank you for your reply. So to be clear, use 1" PVC to the 1.5" bulkhead, and then 1" PVC from the 1.5" bulkhead. Of course reducers would be used to make these transitions. Do I understand you right?

Yes, you have to use 1.5" bulkheads since the holes are that size. Once you have to bulkheads in you can reduce to 1". In fact I'd even leave the emergency drain @ 1.5" (both bulkhead and the pipe), doesn't hurt to have that extra protection since you already have the 1.5" hole anyway.

Looks what I'm looking for. You've calmed my nerves. Thanks.
