There's too many variables here like sump or no sump, protein skimmer, and so on. There's definitely a good book called (the reef aquarium) that will have a lot of useful information.

rfgonzo is right, there are a lot of variables...
Are you going to have a sump? What size? Also where will the sump be located in relation to the DT? Do you want a refugium? In sump or in a secondary tank? What type of drain do you have or want? What size drain/s holes do you have?

Thanks,
As mention a newbie... Tank hasn't arrived yet, so not sure of the size of holes. It's a Marineland standard 220 with corner overflows with standard overflow drains . Yes I will be using a sump possible size is (36-16-16) under the tank and have both skimmer and possibly a refugium within the sump. Only things purchased are the tank and stand. So looking for some suggestions and ideas. |

Sounds like a nice tank you have purchased...do take your time to get it right the first time
If I could do one thing different, looking back, I'd include a small pump in the overflows (maybe run only 5 minutes a day) to help keep it clean...there's a lot of junk in the bottom of the overflows. I like to keep maintenance to a minimal and I like things clean...no buildup. I have the Neptune controller, works really well with Smartphone. Checkout my setup and feel free to ask for an specifics: https://www.flickr.com/photos/796147...7634363157912/ Note there are separate photo sets for Display Tank and Filtration/Support Systems.
