Yellow tang doesnt seem to eat

I've had my yellow tang for 2 weeks and he seems to have stopped eating. He was doing good at first, but has lost interest in food. Is it possible he has linear idsease? If so what should I feed him. My water parameters are normal 0 amonia 0 nitrite 10 ppm nitrate 8.2 PH.

Even when the food floats right in front of hime he doesnt take it. I'm feeding a variety of frozen food mysis shrimp, krill etc for omnivors specifically for guys like him and blue tang.

My blue tang is eating like a mad man but I'm worried about my yellow guy. Other then not eating he doesnt seem sick.

Is he in a QT or your main tank?

Without pic or more details I am going to predict it's parasitic. First sign of disease generally is fish being shy and stop eating.

when you say "linear disease" i assume you're referring to HLLE, Head and Lateral Line Erosion, aka Hole in the Head Disease?

i have a YT with some HLLE, it has in no way negatively impacted his appetite. he eats like a horse.

if there are no other issues with bullying or otherwise stressing factors, i would agree with bnumair that it's probably a parasite or other type of disease.

-edit- you do mention another tang. how big is your tank? is it possible there is aggression going on between them?

here is some supplemental on HLLE:

I've never had any luck with yellow tangs and I've had a ton of them. They look great, then one day they seem a bit off, then they're dead.

But when he's about to go (and you'll know), don't hope for the best, do him a favor and fish him out and euthanize him before the other fish start eating him before he's completely dead.

I have read that putting him back in QT is just going to add stress and not help. I hung some sea weed on the tank to mix up his diet, and hes not touching it...I fear the end could be close unless someone has any ideas...

First of all, I'm not part of the tang police dept. lol. But, 2 tangs in a 55 is not the best practice. Do as you may, but the outcome will be the same. Stress=disease, disease=death. Naturally tangs cover some distance while in the wild. They need lots of space to satisfy their needs. Even, some clowns are not suitable for a 55. I know our desires, sometimes outweigh our judgement. Just trying to be a responsible hobbyist. Happy reefing.

The tangs I have kept including Yellow were not happy and healthy unless plenty of plant material in tank or fed whole leaves of romaine lettuce (on a lettuce clip in tank). Store bought fish food really doesn't cut it alone IME. I've had a yellow devour a rock full of feather caulerpa in a day. I have not kept in tank plants in forever but sump/refugium is a good place for extra food. Otherwise feed romaine lettuce...

Will a yellow tang eat lettuce on a veggie clip? I have some trouble feeding my YT also. Do you put in raw lettuce, or boil it a little first, or soak in water before putting in.

Yes yellows are primarily what I'm talking about. I've never kept a lot of tangs but also had hippo and purple. Just wash fresh romaine and hang a leaf in the tank.

Thank you everyone, and Minn...I like the advise unfortunately he didnt make it through the night. All the other fish seem normal and very active eating like mad men. The blue tang is tiny right now and will out grow my tank in the future and my LFS said they will take him in trade when the time comes. A lesson learned I'll wait on another YT until I up size ...thanks again everyone...

I hope the lesson you mean that was learned was that you should quarantine. it's not hard not expensive and doesn't take up much space. Having a few meds on hand & using a qt will save so much money on lost fish it is just ridiculous. The amount of parasites that come in on fish in this hobby is just unbelievable.

So sorry you lost your yt. I just got my second one. If this one doesn't do well, I won't try again. Not putting them or me through it
