Plumbing Help
Hello everyone im not exactly new to the hobby but this is my first attempt at plumbing a vertical distance higher than 2 ft or so.
So the details; I have an external overflow box with a 1 inch bulkhead plumbed to 1" pvc going down approximately 60". there are two 90's along this path. the problem; very noticeable turbulent flow noise coming from the pipes themselves. I have messed with the actual standpipe and that is nice and quiet no issues there. I have attempted drain exit above and below the surface of the water, reverse durso in 1", 1.5", and 2" sizes, and i even tried this thing called a bubble killer i found in google images. I am assuming the water may be crashing at the 90's and that is where most of the sound is coming from. I am not looking at a terribly large amount of flow and am aiming for somewhere in the area of 400- 500 gph. Any advice here would be greatly appreciated. I am considering the following; 1) replace the 1" pvc with 1" flex spa to reduce turbulence at elbows, although i would prefer not to as i don't like working with that stuff at all tbh. 2) replace the 90's with 45's to possibly decrease turbulence 3) step up the actual drain line size itself after the bulkhead. I am not entirely sure how this would help but it seems that in other threads i have found that as a suggestion although im not positive it was in regards to my particular problem. I think mostly people were putting this out as far as increasing the size of a durso relative to bulkhead size but hey it can't hurt to ask. also just a note, please don't suggest beananimal or herbie as i know those are the preferred methods for everything everytime but for me right now on this hob that just isn't an option. I have used herbie in the past and the beananimal will be on the "dreamtank" one day but for right now those just aren't going to work for me. thanks in advance for any help and have a nice day |

Is the noise coming from the pipes shaking or from flow through the pipe? I have a tin ear but is it more of a whooshing noise or a vibration? Assuming its a whooshing noise, I would bet that stepping up the pipe size after the bulkhead would help.
If its a vibration noise, I'd first check the transmission and, in particular, the clutch (sorry, couldn't resist). If its vibration, you need to make sure the pipes are really tightly tied down.

Whooshing and thank you so much you confirmed what I was kinda thinking, like I said I can't put a finger on why that would help but I think it will, plus I have 1.5" sweep 90's so they shouldn't crash like regulars

And make sure you change the oil every 3,000 miles. Good luck.

Some things to consider that I had to do:
I figured out some of the gurgling stopped when the air bubbles were stopped from going in. I used in the over flow a mesh like gutter guard that doesn't trap anything but breaks up something LOL A 45 elbow at the end of the pipe under water. Why, I don't know but it was a huge help. Pipe insulation wrap so It muffles the sound. Good luck, I am as quiet as I'd like now and actually like some waterfall noise. [IMG][/IMG]
