Keep Critters out of sump

I've tried everything to keep the cucumbers I have out of the sump. I hear stories of them getting into pump propellers and nuking a tank and I'm trying to avoid that. I tried placing teeth and filter floss in the overflow which they would have to climb over to get in. Even with these in place I just battled with one for an hour to get it out of the drain hose.

Any suggestions would be great.
