Exclamation Powerheads

I was thinking of upgrading my powerheads to the ecotech models.

Question is, for a 90G, would I be best getting like 2 MP10s or one MP40?

Depends on what you want to keep. You will probably have a couple dead spots if you go with just one. I have a 40 and 2 10's on my 90 and flow is perfect.

Phew, really lmao? That seems like so much to me. I honestly didn't expect that powerheads would be one of the more pricey items.

I'd love to keep ideally any coral I want, this way I don't need to upgrade powerheads in the future.

Also, where is your placement with that assortment? Can you post a pic?

Lol, I feel your pain. When I first started I had 2 korallias in a 72g bowfront. I couldn't understand why people spent so much money on power heads. A couple used mp10s came up for sale locally for a good price so I snatched them up. When I upgraded to my 90, I added a used mp40 as well. They really do make a big difference and are worth the money, especially if you can find them used IMO.

Here's a recent FTS, you can see where I have them:

Yeah that's exactly where I'm at, seems so strange to spend that much, but if it's worth it, it's worth it. Thanks for the pic and advice brotha!

I don't have MP. Ballers! I use two cheap Jebao WP40.

for my 100 gallon, 1 WP40 was enough. but a second one definitely covered all the dead spots and cleaned my rocks better.

definitely go for 2 if you can... and I would get the bigger models in case you upgrade tank in the future.

If you're worried about price, Tunze powerheads are much cheaper than Ecotech.

in my 90 i have a jabao wp40 and two koralia 750's for the dead spots, i thought the same thing about flow when i first started my saltwater tank, didn't realize how much the tank could really take and how much better off it is with the higher flow.

If you want to be able to keep all types of coral you are going to need 40 to 50 times you DT in total flow (combination of powerheads and return pump delivered after head pressure loss flow) so between 3500gph and 4500gph of flow. Two MP-40 would work well. The nice thing about the MP-40's or any of the other programable pumps is that they allow you to vary and alternate flow from one side of the tank to the other. These varied flow paterns and very important to the health of your corals.

I also vote for Jebao if you dont have the cash to fork over for a Vortech. They seem to get really good reviews

On a 4' tank, I'd also go with two MP40s. There's just so much you can do with them, especially if you've got an Apex. I went from two Koralia 1050s in my 90g, and haven't looked back.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I don't mind getting the ecotechs, but I was thinking two MP10s. Would two MP40s really be more preferable? Nearly $800 for powerheads LOL (Can't seem to find any used)

I think it's something like 50 posts and 90 days membership before you can view the for sale section. Like somebody else said, there are a number of MP40s currently for sale on this site.

Welcome to Reefcentral lol.

The more random flow the better. It looks like your mind is set with the 40's which is a good thing. Down the line, consider adding a powerhead on the back wall. I have 2 mp40s and 2 mp10s on my 80g. I have a wp10 behind my rocks.

I suppose I'll have to spend $800 since I don't qualify LOL.

Would two MP40s really be more preferable than two MP10s?

Man that seems like so much flow, something I can't quite get used to even after being in this hobby a while lol. Got ya!
