Cool Seachem Matrix

Hi!

I have bought a bottle of Seachem Matrix. According to the marketing description of the product it is supposed to help lower nitrates (among other things) by harboring areobic & anaerobic bacteria.

Quote from the product site:
Quote:
"These macropores are ideally sized for the support of nitrifying and denitrifying bacteria. This allows Matrix™, unlike other forms of biomedia, to remove nitrate along with ammonia and nitrite, simultaneously and in the same filter."
Has anyone here used this product? And if so does it really help keep ammonia, nitrites and nitrates low?

How long does it take for the media to establish anaerobic bacteria that will help lower the nitrates and how effective is it at doing so?

Think of it as concentrated live rock. It does the same thing, but because it has "ideally sized" macropores, it's much more effective per pound. So, like live rock, it will take anywhere from a few weeks to a couple months to really be effective.

If you already have live rock, you may not notice any difference.

This is a really good product, it's like one bottle gives you the surface area of 25# of LR. I'm not sure about it's ability to reduce nitrates, but overall definitely a good product.

How often (and how) should one conduct maintenance on the Seachem Matrix? Should I rinse with tank water or fresh water?
