10G Nano Tank Help
Hello wonderful folks of reef central!
I've been in the hobby for about 4 years now, however that was with freshwater. I have learned very fast that salt water is a completely new monster so to speak. I've been reading several forums before I registered and for some reason people seem much nicer on this site than others. Anyways, here it goes! Attached is a picture of my nano tank. It is roughly 9 weeks old. I plan to add coral eventually, and as far as I know, I already have the proper lighting for coral. (links to my equipment below). The giant center rock in the picture is live, and it's got all kinds of hitchhikers on it from the pet store! The two side rocks are not live (yet) but I have no idea what the little white specks growing on them are. Perhaps someone here knows. Right now I've got 2 emerald crabs and 3 convict damsels in the tank, plus whoever came on the rock; I think I've seen a few hermit crabs roaming around. The number of fish and living things in the tank is probably a bit high, and I'm aware of that, which is why I keep up on my water changes. I've also got your standard heater, and a power head from Hydor. I've ordered a protein skimmer which should actually be here tomorrow. Speaking of that, once I have my skimmer, do I even need a HOB filter like I have currently? I've heard many different things. It sounds like they both do a lot of the same things from my research so perhaps someone could shed some light on the differences for me? It's a really confusing topic! I absolutely love my fish, and the point of this post is to make sure I'm not doing anything catastrophic! Your picture isn't very good but I would guess the white Are pineapple.

Equipment seems fine. You could use the HOB filter still with either additional rock rubble, bag of carbon, bag of gfo, etc.

I would remove the filter pads out of the HOB filter and run a small bag of carbon and a bag of GFO in it instead.

First off, welcome to Reef Central!
+1 on ditching the filter pads & replacing w/ carbon & GFO. Good luck!
